Samuel C. Vance (d. 1830), a U.S. Army officer in the Northwest Territory, was deputy paymaster at Fort Washington, near Cincinnati (1791-1802). From 1803-1830 he was a merchant and land speculator at Lawrenceburg (Dearborn County, Ind.). Lawrence M. The second son and third child of Col. William Preston and his wife Susanna Smith, was born at "Greenfield," Botetourt County (Va.), 2 August 1765.
